A birth doula is a woman who supports mothers and their families from the prenatal period through the early moments of life with a new child. Birth doulas are often experienced or trained in preparing and encouraging mothers for the birth process. Birth doulas recognize the lasting impact that each childbirth experience has on a mother. And they strive to help every mother feel empowered and safe throughout her unique birth experience. Other doula specialties, like postpartum doulas, support women and their families through the changes of the postnatal period and the transition to life with a new child. All doulas recognize the profound affects of birth, death, and the surrounding transition periods. We exist as a profession to support those experiencing such changes.
Doulas are trained professionals who assist in preparing for and coping with labor. Their emotional, physical, and educational support and advocacy before and during labor has been shown to improve labor outcomes and maternal satisfaction. In fact, continuous support by a doula during labor has been shown to reduce the risk of Caesarian by about 39%, increase the likelihood of spontaneous vaginal birth by 15%, decrease the need for pain medication by 10%, and increase the likelihood of maternal birth satisfaction by 39%. There is no doubt that the presence of a doulas makes birth safer, more empowering, and better for mother and child. Many families feel as though they may benefit from doula care but feel unsure of how they might finance such a service. Doula costs can range from around $900 to $1500 in Waco and the surrounding areas, which can be more than some families can afford on top of all other birth related costs. I urge you to reach out to me or other local doulas for a discussion of your care needs and budget. Many doulas including myself are willing to meet you where you are or connect you with a doula who might be able to cover your needs at a lower rate. Doula care should be available to everyone, regardless of financial situation.
